Water-Saving Products for the Bathroom

Today is the time to reconsider all our habits, from showering to brushing our teeth. To protect tomorrow's water, we need to start saving it together today. How?

A few simple steps can help protect water resources and reduce your household water bills. Personal habits are just as important as technological innovations when it comes to saving water. Did you know that bathrooms account for the largest share of household water use, at 40%? This makes them the place where the greatest savings can be achieved.

Water-saving taps and showers

Showerheads that limit flow to 6 or 9 litres per minute, taps that enrich the water stream with air, mixer handles that deliver cold water in the central position, and fittings that balance fluctuating water pressure are among the innovations offered by many brands focused on water conservation.

Choosing a single-lever mixer instead of a tap with two controls saves the water that would otherwise run to waste while you adjust both controls to reach the temperature you want. Models that remember your preferred temperature can even prevent a single drop from being wasted.

While an older showerhead uses 15–20 litres of water per minute, a water-saving model can reduce this to 9 litres.

Sensor-operated products use an optical sensor to run only when movement is detected beneath the tap. These systems offer ideal water savings for basins in busy shared facilities.

Water-saving flush systems

Choosing a dual-flush system with a second button that uses half the water, or a flush with a start–stop button, brings water savings to another of the home's most water-intensive areas. A water-saving flush can save up to 35,000 litres per year.

Water-saving habits

Taking a bath uses three times as much water as showering. It may be surprising, but some people still leave the tap running while brushing their teeth. Repairing dripping taps and leaking flushes prevents a lake's worth of water from gradually going to waste. When cleaning the bathroom, use two buckets—one for clean water and one for dirty water—to reduce consumption. Spraying detergent onto surfaces rather than pouring it into the bucket also keeps the water clean for longer.
