Kalebodur and Oğuz Yalım Bring Ceramic Upcycling to Art in “Kaçış Noktası”

Established as an interdisciplinary platform for making and meeting within Kale Group’s “İyi Bak Dünyana” initiative, Kale Design and Art Centre (KTSM) believes art and design can make the world a better place and continues to champion ideas that create social benefit.

With sustainability at its core and support from Kalebodur, KTSM is hosting “Kaçış Noktası”, an exhibition of works created from ceramic waste by interior architect and artist Oğuz Yalım, from 14 September to 1 October.

Created using waste from the manufacture of Kalebodur’s innovative Kalesinterflex product, Yalım’s works offer distinctive examples of sustainable art in “Kaçış Noktası”, his ninth solo exhibition.

Thirteen sustainable artworks by Yalım, who reinterprets Kalesinterflex—an environmentally responsible technological product as well as the largest porcelain ceramic—through art, will be displayed at KTSM.

One work will be installed on the terrace of SALT Galata. The venue will host “Saat Sabahın 25’i”, which evokes being half awake and half asleep, on a timeless journey between reality and the surreal.

The exhibition will present twelve 60x60 cm works made from Kalesinterflex and one 120x185 cm work in the same material. The thirteen works are titled: Günün Rotası, Rüyanda Görürsün, Anlık Bir Buluşma, Tersim Döndü, Damsız Girilmez, Kaybolmadan Önce, Yukarı Mahalle, Keyifli Bir Yalnızlık, Ergen Cepheler, Havalı Sokaklar, Sen Bir de İçimi Gör, Bir ile Çok and Saklambaç.

Reworking Kalesinterflex into an entirely new format, Oğuz Yalım said: “My compositions are full of vanishing points. Although these points can be found within my paintings, they are often outside them, and their locations are unknown. We reinterpreted some of my works on canvas according to Kalesinterflex’s colours, textures and structural qualities. Together with Kaleseramik, we embarked on a new path, seeking new ‘Kaçış Noktaları’ from leftover pieces.”

Specially cut ceramic pieces used in the artworks will be available at the “Kaçış Noktası” interactive table, allowing visitors to create their own panels. Using geometric pieces on the table in the exhibition space, visitors will be able to explore their own vanishing points.

Kale Design and Art Centre is a platform for making and meeting that opens space for interdisciplinary exchange. With sustainability at its core and responsible production and consumption—a Sustainable Development Goal—as a priority, KTSM is also a pioneer of the “İyi Bak Dünyana” initiative. Championing ideas that generate social benefit, it has designed each floor as a different space for making and learning. Alongside design and art workshops, talks and presentations, the centre includes a ceramics production area with a kiln; a ground-floor exhibition space for original, free and meaningful creative work; a library with a special collection focused on design, art and architecture; and a workshop equipped with materials.

Believing in sustainability across every aspect of life, not only art and design, Kale Group has also created a special space within KTSM: Roots Studio Cafe. Supporting local producers and founded on a zero-waste philosophy, the café brings together people who care for their world for stimulating conversations.

A 1993 graduate of the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design at Bilkent University’s Faculty of Fine Arts, Oğuz Yalım has run ARTFUL Interior Architecture and Product Design with his wife and business partner Ece Yalım since 1996. He also teaches part-time in the interior architecture departments of Başkent University and TED University.

Since early 2017, Yalım has focused more closely on painting, which he has pursued alongside his professional and teaching careers. He continues to explore different themes, drawing on 25 years of interests, experience, observation and hobbies.
