A Traditional Touch for Tile Patterns: Patchwork

The technique of joining small pieces of fabric in a distinctive cutting and sewing pattern to create a larger piece is known as kırkyama, or by its internationally recognised name, patchwork. With a history stretching back through the ages, it is regarded as one of the oldest forms of cultural heritage and traditional art. Its origins can be traced to the ancient Egyptians. Used by local people for clothing, wall hangings, curtains and furniture, the earliest depictions of this technique date back 5,500 years, to 3400 BC.

Surviving examples of patchwork from the remains of the Chinese Empire suggest that, in later periods, the technique developed and became more widespread as layers of fabric were joined together to make soldiers’ armour. By the 11th and 13th centuries, patchwork had reached European homes. It began to appear in quilts needed as the European continent grew colder. From this point onwards, patchwork flourished, with growing uses, greater frequency and an expanding variety of patterns and designs.
